Building Intercultural Competencies: An International
Study Tour
“Uganda – The Pearl of Africa”
As our country moves into the 21st century, intercultural
competencies are becoming more critical to our society. Whether
in education, government, private business, or in a multitude
of other occupations, the chance of interacting with individuals
with backgrounds of different national cultures has substantially
increased over the past decade. International travel provides
great opportunities to better understand other cultures and appreciate
how our own cultural values relate to other societies throughout
the world.
Become more sensitive in working with other cultures
in the rural community by immersing yourself in another culture.
Join others from the agricultural community to venture into the
heart of Africa to experience rural life. This unique international
study tour has been created by the Agricultural Leadership, Education
& Communication Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
in cooperation with Friendship Force International (FFI). ACDI/VOCA
(Agricultural Cooperative Development International/Volunteers
in Overseas Cooperative Assistance) has assisted with the arrangements
in Uganda.
The Kamuli District Farmers’ Association,
a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Uganda, will host our
UNL study group in their rural village of Kamuli, Uganda. They
have invited us for a visit to better understand their way of
life, their country, and their dreams for the future, and the
technical assistance they are receiving from American agencies
such as ACDI/VOCA. They are planning a busy and fun filled schedule
to meet them, their families, and others in their community.
“Tourism in Africa” is the theme for
the second half of the study tour. A safari will illustrate how
Uganda is capitalizing on unique opportunities within Africa to
bring the tourist dollar into the country.
